3-Hour Update: AMG Team GetSpeed leads the way after hectic hour at Spa-Francorchamps

30 July 2022

AMG Team GetSpeed led the 2022 TotalEnergies of Spa shortly before the three-hour mark amid a chaotic period of the race.

The third hour began behind the safety car following an earlier incident involving the #57 Mercedes-AMG. There was a further incident before the track went green when the #93 Mercedes-AMG driven by Jonathan Hui made contact with the #9 Porsche of Antares Au, turning the Macanese driver around at La Source. The #93 subsequently recieved a drive-through for the collision.

When the safety car peeled in there were more problems, with the #33 Audi and the #27 Lamborghini finding themselves in the gravel trap. Replays suggested that the latter was helped on its way by the #83 Ferrari tipping Isaac Tutumlu Lopez off the track.

After a few laps of green flag conditions the #97 Aston Martin of Théo Nouet was beached in the barriers at Les Combes. This required an immediate full-course yellow, but the #777 Mercedes-AMG failed to slow and slammed into the rear of the #74 Porsche. Having led the Silver Cup class from the start, the #777 remained in the pits at the three-hour mark.

They tried again with two hours and 40 minutes on the clock, the #2 Mercedes-AMG of Maxi Götz leading overall from the similar #88 machine. Second-place man Dani Juncadella was initially under major pressure from Thomas Preining in the #54 Porsche, but quickly found his feet and gapped the Austrian.

Following the demise of the #777 it was the #30 Audi out front in the Silver Cup, while the #10 Boutsen Racing Audi had moved to the front of the Gold Cup classification. The #188 McLaren topped the Pro-Am class, while the #20 Mercedes-AMG remained out front in the Bronze Cup.
